What information is needed for the beneficiaries on a will and life insurance?

Chelle asked:

My dad is going to add my hubby and I to his will so that we get custody of my little brother if anything were to happen to him and my stepmom. He also wants to add us to his life insurance policy so that we would recieve that as well so that we would be set for my little brother. The company is asking for our social security numbers, birthdays, addresses and names to add us. Does that sound right? Or is that fishy to give out all of that info?

Sounds correct

That is exactly the information they need to have. Just be sure to keep your addresses up to date.

No, that’s right – they need to be able to distinguish you from all the other people out there that have the same name, and possibly the same date of birth.

That is standard information that the company will request. The companies have a change of beneficiary form that is usually completed by the owner of the policy in order to make the change.
